|Greetings, Rock and Roll Daycare Staff and Families!|
Ooh la la! Rock and Roll children are enjoying a trip around France, while they learn about it’s geography, it’s culture and it’s delicious cuisine. We visit one of the oldest nations in the World and the most ethnically diverse country in Europe. France has been a cradle of fashion, literature, philosophy, music, art and film for centuries. How amazing are all the projects and activities our children have participated in during these past two months?
The music and culture of France has been very inspirational! We hope you have enjoyed content from the French Heritage Songbook, Curriculum Guide, and Phil Berman’s adaptation of Cendrillon!
Cendrillon is a classical opera in four acts was written by Jules Massenet and based on Perrault’s 1698 version of the fairy tale Cinderella. Its premiere performance took place in Paris in 1899 during LaBelle Epoque, an era in which the arts flourished in Europe. Massenet’s version of Cinderella is different from her fairy tale counterpart. In this version, she is a passionate young woman, determined to win the Prince’s love. Even the music undergoes a transformation when she meets the Prince, going from simple to complex to represent her own personal development.
The Prince is also a strongminded and independent character. He refuses to marry without love, and searches throughout the whole kingdom to find Cendrillon. This character was actually designed for a mezzo-soprano, and thus sung by a woman, which makes him a very innocent and romantic hero. We hope you are enjoying traveling through France and we are excited about presenting to you our next country of study. What will it be?
