New in 2017-18

We are excited to announce several new additions to our preschool music program. Beginning the week of Tuesday, September 5, we will be rolling out our first ever Rock and Roll Orchestra program with master Suzuki strings teacher David France. All Preschool students will be enrolled in the Suzuki progression that emphasizes technique, posture, and musicality twice a week during music time. We are thrilled to embark on this new path with our students and look forward to seeing the impact a focused group instrumental program has on the children’s musical development.

In addition to the orchestra program, we are bringing back our extended music program for preschool students. Extended music begins with a standard 30-minute lesson and then breaks out into 10-minute work sessions between the specialist and 1-2 students. Specialists will use this time to better engage with students at their individual musical level and work on custom-built activities to develop sense of pitch, rhythm, and orchestration and prepare children for music literacy. We have been developing this curriculum at our 527 Cambridge Street preschool for the better part of 2017 and are excited to finally share it with the larger Rock & Roll student body.

A large portion of our extended curriculum is based around a set of rainbow desk bells that children have access to in the classroom. These bells help train children’s ears to recognize pitches and begin to read and play simple melodies from color-coded sheet music. We strongly encourage parents to purchase a set of bells for their child at home. If you’d like a set you can order it here for $50.

As a result of our increased music time, we will be discontinuing private music lessons during the school day. If you would like your child to continue private lessons on piano, guitar, violin, or drums with Jane or Yaman, you can sign up for a 15-minute lesson time with them on Saturday mornings from 9-11 am at a fee of $40 per month.

We can’t wait to begin this new chapter in the Rock and Roll music program and observe the impact it has on the preschool students.
